Actor Alec Baldwin accidentally killed a man on the set of the new western Rast
Cameraman Galina Hutchins died as a result of an incident involving the use of a prop pistol on the set of the western Rust starring Alec Baldwin, which took place in New Mexico.
According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, Baldwin himself fired a firearm. The film's director, Joel Sousa, was also seriously injured and was taken by ambulance to the Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he received emergency care.
The death of 42-year-old Hutchins was confirmed by the police and the International Guild of Cinematographers Local 600. The actor has not been charged yet.
"Tonight we received the terrible news that one of our members, Galina Hutchins, the director of photography of the film "Rust" in New Mexico, died from injuries sustained on set. At the moment, the details are unclear, but we are working to find out more [information] and support a full investigation of this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a family member of our Guild."
Hutchins graduated from the American Film Institute in 2015 and worked on several short films, after which she joined the crew of the action movie Archenemy ("Max Fist") with Joe Manganiello. In 2019, the American Cinematographer called her a "rising star".
"She's a wonderful, positive, creative person who was incredibly excited to break through [into the film industry] and make films. She was really on the rise," said Michael Pessa, a cinematographer and friend of Hutchins.
Baldwin co-produces "Rust" and plays a notorious criminal named Harland Rust in it. After his 13-year-old grandson Lucas was convicted of accidental murder and sentenced to hanging, Rust goes to Kansas to rescue the teenager from prison. US Marshal Wood Helm (Jensen Ackles) and bounty hunter Fenton "Preacher" Lang (Travis Fimmel) sit on the tail of the two fugitives, from whom it is not so easy to hide.
To the mass audience, Alec Baldwin should be known for such films as "The Hunt for Red October", "Shadow", "On the Verge", "Apostates" and the last two parts of "Mission Impossible".
