Legendary Studios and Warner Bros. have officially given the green light to develop the second part of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune". The continuation of the epic story will be released in theaters on October 20, 2023.
"Dune" was launched in the USA on October 22 simultaneously with the release on HBO Max streaming. On the first weekend, the film grossed $40.1 million at the home box office, showing the largest debut weekend in Villeneuve's career on the domestic market and the largest launch among all Warner Bros. hybrid releases of 2021.
"I have just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with the second part of Dune," Villeneuve said in a published statement. "It was my dream to adapt Frank Herbert's Dune, and I want to thank the fans, the cast and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. for supporting this dream. This is just the beginning."
Legendary representatives, in turn, noted that they would not have reached this point without Villeneuve's outstanding vision, everyone involved in the project and, of course, fans. Warner Bros. spoke in approximately the same vein.:
"Denis Villeneuve has created a film that is both visually unusual and emotionally exciting, as evidenced by its global success both among critics and at the box office. We are very excited to continue this journey with Denis, his cast and crew, as well as our partners from Legendary, and can't wait to present the next chapter of this epic story in theaters in October 2023."
